I saw Ghost in the Shell a little while ago, and I actually really liked this movie. I never saw the anime this was based off of, but I don't think you need to in order to have a really fun time with this movie. There have been a lot of mixed reviews for this film, and I think it depends on your taste.
For me I think the movie is an excellent sci-fi film with really cool action, amazing special effects, and really good acting. There was a whole controversy about white washing, but if you get over that fact, and just enjoy the film for what it is you will not regret it.
In the end, Ghost in the Shell is a movie that I recommend you see as soon as you can because it is a movie that has a really deep message with cool action wrapped around it.
