Black Sails

I recently watched the series Black Sails again, and I just have to say is I can't wait for its next and final season in January. This show is a lot of fun, and I feel it shows a semi real depiction of what a life of a pirate really was. Now I realize it is fiction, but I do think they have some of it right.

If you liked the Pirates of Caribbean movies you will probably really enjoy this show since it is that just a lot bloodier. What I mean is that this show is on Starz, one of the movie channels, like HBO. Black Sails is not for a younger audience, and I think it makes better that way. For a show like this they could've went with a different channel, and it still might've been good, but since they have no boundaries I think it adds to the realism of the time.

The acting is top notch, and one character that it tells the origins of is Long John Silver, and if you don't know who that is watch the fun Disney film, Treasure Planet. In the end, I think most people would enjoy this series, and should give it a chance. I was hooked by the first five minutes of episode one, and if you aren't at least curious by the end then it isn't for you. I say most people should definitely try and see this show as soon as they can. It is a fun show that I can't wait to see how it ends.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I saw Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them this past weekend, and all I have to say is the magical world is back! I loved this film, and if you at all liked Harry Potter you will too. The story was very interesting, and the characters have depth.

At first you might be wary of the characters, but they are not what they first appear, and as the film moves on you see there is more than meets the eye. The acting was really good, and the effects just grab you instantly. This does exactly what it is supposed to do which is introducing these characters, and this time period, and it did it perfectly.

Newt is such a likeable guy; he is misunderstood just like his creatures, but when he shows us who he truly is you can't help but like him. I can't wait to see more of his adventures. Also, there is one actor that shows up briefly at the end, and I can't wait to see more of him. In the end, Fantastic Beasts is a film that I think every Harry Potter fan should see as soon as possible. Even if you didn't like Harry Potter I think most people can have a blast with this film.

Doctor Strange

Marvel has done it again; they have introduced another comic book hero in a really fun film. Doctor Strange is a great summer film that came out in November that just works. I can understand not liking all the Marvel films that have come out over the years, but I think this movie works.

Doctor Strange is about an arrogant surgeon who gets into a major car crash, and loses the use of his hands. While searching for a cure he comes across the Ancient One who teaches him more about life, and how to defend it. The acting is good, and the special effects are amazing. This movie is very trippy, so I strongly recommend you have all your wits when watching it.

In the end, I think you should definitely see this film as soon as you can. I didn't see it in 3D, and I still had a blast, but I've heard others say to try it. The choice is yours, but you should see this film in theatres.

Hacksaw Ridge

I saw Hacksaw Ridge a few days ago, and all I have to say is wow. This film was just incredible, and it is so good that I predict and hope that it gets Oscar nominations. Yes, it is that good. It is about a young man during WWII who joins to be a medic, but doesn't want to touch a gun. He wants to save lives, and not take them. No one likes this, but he is allowed to do just that eventually.

No matter what you might think of Mel Gibson he really knows how to direct a beautiful, gritty war film. I was never bored, and once you get to the war the scenes are brutal, but shot with care. This is a movie that everyone who can handle the war violence needs to see as soon as they can. Another thing I found really cool is that this story is true; the man this is about actually lived, and did what they show.

Honestly, he does all of this because of his faith, but they wrote the story in a way that they aren't pushing faith down your throats. You can believe in nothing and see this film, and just believe in humanity again. I can't praise this film enough, and everyone needs to see Hacksaw Ridge.

Deepwater Horizon

I saw Deepwater Horizon the other day, and it was really good. I know they probably had to change some things, but if the BP characters were like that at all than man were those guys jerks.

I found it a little boring in the beginning, but as soon as the explosion occurs it picks up very quickly. I'm really surprised how many of those people survived a disaster like that. I think everyone should watch this film at least once because you will then have more of a respect for the people who get us our oil; I know I do.

I would have to say my only technical complaint is that during the chaos the camera is a little too shaky at points that you can't always tell what happened, or who might have just gotten hurt. It doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film, but it did bother me a bit. In the end, I think you should see this film at least once. It doesn't have to be in the theatre, but it should be seen.
